HISTORY

Villa di Piazzano is an historical residence. It was built in the early 1500s by Cardinal Silvio Passerini, a protege of the Medici's, as his hunting manor.

At one time the property extended for 360 hectares. Today hunting of wild boar, pheasant and other animals still takes place in the surrounding hills during the hunting season.

After a careful restoration the property was brought back to life and opened to the public in 2001 as a refined refuge for the more discerning travellers.

The Owners

John Damian Wimpole, a former Australian diplomat, together with his wife Adriana and daughter, Alessandra own Villa di Piazzano.

While the local town, Cortona, sets about preserving its historical past, the Wimpole family retains some of Australia’s past: furniture from The George hotel in Fitzroy street, St Kilda, for example; there is the Scottish grandfather clock which Damian's grandfather brought with him when he arrived in Australia from England in 1862. Observe some of the other furniture and note that it may seem fitting but maybe a touch out of place to the careful observer; such as the sideboards and other pieces elements from when the Damian's parents sold the George in 1958.

It is this style and detail that sets Villa di Piazzano aside from other hotels. That and the fact that, the Wimpole family bring a dignity, temperate atmosphere and charm to this wonderful, wonderful place.

Location

Villa di Piazzano is literally on the border of Tuscany and Umbria. It provides easy access to visit the many medieval towns in both regions.

Pienza, Montepulciano, Siena, Arezzo, Perugia, Deruta, Gubbio, Assisi are just a few of the nearby attractions.

Cortona is 10 minutes by car and around 9 Km on your eBike. At the end of the day, enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the Italian countryside at Villa di Piazzano.
